Metro - subway system
Washington's Metro system is a pretty efficient way to get around if you know about a few things. If you are staying outside of downtown and plan to use the Metro, be aware that it doesn't open until 8 am on weekends. Metro is NOT open 24 hours a day; it closes at midnight on every night but Friday and Saturday nights, when it closes at 2 am.
Caravans and Buses
If you are coming to Washington in a bus, van or caravan, there are several Metro stations that are set up to handle vast numbers of protesters. If you are coming from the North, park at the Greenbelt Metro station (Green Line). If you are coming from the south, park at the Franconia-Springfield station (Blue Line). If you have arranged a bus, the best place to park buses is at the Stadium-Armory station (Blue and Orange lines)

Orientation

Downtown World Bank and IMF Meetings

The following map of the proposed fence (Wall of Shame) was published in the Washington Post. Please keep in mind that the actual location of the fence--if the cops manage to build it--will have a different perimeter than this map indicates. A map of the police perimeter from the A16 protests will be posted here later this week.

Bus Entrance from Metro Exit
This is what you see once you emerge from the Woodley Park/Zoo Metro station and look immediately to your right. This driveway slopes up to the bus entrance of the Marriott-Wardman Park Hotel. This is a side entrance to the hotel.

Connecticut and Calvert from the Roof
The view of the main commercial strip along Connecticut Ave. from the roof of the Marriott. Conn. Ave is the major street that runs from lower left to upper right. Bridge in upper right of picture leads to Dupont Circle neighborhood to the south. Area with trees in the middle is Rock Creek Park (which is a steep ravine).

Connecticut and Woodley from the roof
Looking down at the intersection of Connecticut and Woodley, immediately to the North of the Wardman Park wing of the Marriott. This is the road that leads up to the Marriott's main entrance. The buildings along Connecticut at this point are mainly apartment towers.

Connecticut Ave. from Roof
The main commerical strip along Conn. Ave. immediately below the hotel on the East. Metro entrance is not pictured, but is to the right of the traffic island. The stores are mostly local restuarants, but there is a McDonalds across the street from this strip, as well as a Chipotles (owned by McDonalds), a CVS (obnoxious drug store chain, and a Baskin Robbins.

Connecticut Avenue Looking East
Commercial strip along Connecticut Avenue. The building complex in the lower right houses McDonalds and CVS. Neighborhood in the upper left is Adams Morgan and in the upper right, Dupont Circle.

Metro Entrance Looking Northwest Toward Marriott
This is the subway entrance to the Woodley Park/Zoo Metro Station. The building towering above is the Wardman Park wing of the Marriott Hotel. The main Marriott hotel is a modern building; this building was incorporated at some point.

Metro Entrance from the Roof
The Metro entrance plaza next to Connecticut Avenue.

New Hotel Lobby looking West
The rooftop of the main Marriott hotel.

Looking West from the Marriott Rooftop
To the West of the Marriott are several residential neighborhoods. That structure on the skyline is the National Cathedral.

Connecticut and Calvert Looking South
The cross street that goes from right to left is Calvert, which goes over the Duke Ellington Bridge in the middle left to Adams Morgan. In the lower part of the picture you may be able to make out the Golden Arches..

View Facing Southeast
Panning right from the Connecticut Ave. commercial strip we see one of the apartment buildings next to the hotel. On the other side of this building, and lsightly to the right, is the historic Omni Shoreham hotel. The structure in the middle of the trees is the Conn. Ave bridge which crosses Rock Creek Park on its way to Dupont Circle.

Typical IMF Manager
That little cop in the background is Assistant Police Chief, Terrence Gainer. We'll have close-up shots of him in the future. Keep in mind that he was one of the cops who clubbed protesters at the 1968 Democratic Convention protests in Chicago.
