The Bell Readme.txt 13Feb03 This readme is for Stephen Smith's TheBell.ogg specifically, and for the other ogg vorbis files I've worked with so far, in general. OK This is The Bell by Stephen Smith It's a cover song It will be my first song I've performed and recorded direct to ogg vorbis instead of the mp3 format If you're new to ogg vorbis let me just tell you that "oggs" are truly free, whereas mp3's are only so free. (and getting less freedom-oriented each and every time corporate entities like Microsoft, Recording Industry Association of America and KODA send out cease and desist letters and assorted other law suits, threats and general harrassments.) Near as any of us can tell there is never going to come a time when an ogg vorbis file can be tied up in the courts the way mp3s and realaudios can. Why? Because the tools going into making your song .ogg vorbis are open source AND free from BEGINNING to END. Most of the time a finished copy of a song I produce can fit easily onto a 1.44 floppy. I'm usually able to come so close without losing too much sound quality to compression, that if any song didn't quite fit, it should still be able to fit on there - zipped. That way you and I could very well hand out songs we've made to people using all those extra annoying free AOL sample floppydisks you might still have lying around under your bed and behind your sofa from back in the windows 3.1 and win95 days. You can get all the more information you need about oggs at: http://www.vorbis.com vorbis.com For the open-source, musical, struggle, against, corporate, buggery, I'm, marco
