CLOSE THE SOA
PLEASE: Pretty Please?
Milwaukee, WI - Last night [4Nov00] I played guitar while
the editor of Racine Labor newspaper sang a parody of
"Alice's Restaurant" for Father Roy of the SOAWatch.
The owner of my favorite record store wanted me to ask
Father Roy if he remembered tipping over a plate of shrimp
dip at O'Connor and Lannan when the University of Minnesota
threw a reception for the war criminals in El Salvador.

I got the chance to ask him later and he said,
  "Boy do I! That got me in a lot of trouble;
I remember it well. That was fun. You
can tell him I remember all that."

But the story on this webpage is mostly about making Father Roy
laugh last night. (Or wait... most of it is about putting these
pictures up and making little captions for them. Yeah, that's it.
I hope you enjoy these photos, they're really pretty great.)
So please forgive me when I digress like that. It's a habit I've
developed over my years of journalism.
These pictures were taken by the friend of my friend Amy. I'll put
a caption at the bottom of each one, for a couple reasons.

1 : so you know what the heck's going on, but also
2 : so people who can't see internet pics aren't forgotten.

That's really good because a lot of times, people surf
the net without pics and then jot down a note to themself
so they can load up a couple pictures the next time they're
near a computer that has graphics.
But I digress again. That was a strong hint for any of you
who might consider making the net more "lynx friendly."

I thought that you might find this interesting. My roommate
from this summer goes to St. Thomas in Minnesota. Their SOA
group is pretty large and trucking right along.

They just set up tables in their "union" for people to make SOA
crosses which they are taking to Ft. Benning. And then they had
a mock assasination right in the middle of their campus!!!

Wouldn't this be great if we could do something like this on our
campus... maybe next semester before the Pentagon Vigil?

My friend is the one dressed as Uncle Sam.
These pics are amazing,

Peace
amy
ps I hope this attachment worked

My first thoughts imagining myself walking down those sidewalks
are those of Arlington National Cemetary, one other gravesite on
the Pine Ridge reservation, and a dream I had last night that
they closed the SOA and put an end to war.

Hey Lady Macbeth. Nice Pontious Pilotish garb you got on.

Esta un camino largo, pero venceremos!
  It's a long walk, but we'll win.

I love the shadow in this picture. Reminds me of our government's
behavior lately.

Here's a couple of the things in that song that made Father Roy laugh: [you can see all of the song's lyrics at: http://flag.blackened.net/ati/fatherroy.html] These soldiers, who were sort of like the Green Berets, except with a nastier attitude, killed some university professors and their housekeeper. Now I know university pro-fessors do tend to be on the liberal, communist-type side. Now some people are just born troublemakers, like Gandhi or Martin Luther King. And you have to count Father in that number. When he was in Bolivia, he got arrested for starting up a human rights group... ...So Father Roy got kicked out of the country, as "persona non grata," which is Latin for troublemaker. ...right in the middle of the rally, a military po-liceman came out with a paper in his hand and he read: "Whoever-within-the-jurisdiction-of -the-United-States-goes-upon- any-military-naval-or-Coast-Guard reservation, post, fort, arsenal, yard, station, or installation, for any purpose prohibited by law or lawful regulation or whoever reenters or is found within any such reservation, post, fort, arsenal, yard station or installation...." and he went on for about five minutes, and nobody understood a word he said. But everybody had a good time singing folk songs and getting their pictures taken with Martin Sheen and such, and they just waited there ready to march over the line. And over 2300 people did.
