Newe Sogobia, Western Shoshone Nation

Newe (Western Shoshone) are one part of the greater Shoshone people. The Newe homeland and Newe based language extend from coastal Los Angeles through many western states.

During the Civil War, the U.S. government was desperate for California gold to pay for the Civil War. They signed right-of-way treaties with  several tribes. The Treaty of Ruby Valley, a "Treaty of Peace and Friendship", was ratified by the U.S. Congress in 1863, and remains part of Constitutional Law today. (See borders right).

While 11 Newe reservations and communities exist inside and out of the Treaty lands, the great majority of Newe still live freely on their traditional lands.

Newe face an high burden of illness, as the Nevada Nuclear Test Site and the proposed Yucca Mt. Waste Repository lie in the heart of their lands. Over 1,000 nuclear bombs have been detonated on Newe land.
