Our team is in transition with some folks leaving and others arriving but everyone is well. I have spent the past 2 days visiting villagers from a specific region along the border of Iraq and Turkey. We spoke with various leaders of the villages of this region who told us the bombing of their villages continues daily. Most of the villages have been unoccupied for over 2 years. Families have moved into surrounding municipalities. They had to sell their livestock. Some live in camps, others are crowded into houses of relatives. Only a handful of the men return to the villages in the night to water their walnut trees and check on their property. The walnuts are sold at the market. The villagers want desperately to return home. They describe their villages as "paradise". They had everything they wanted there. Their tenacity is beyond words. Since the 1980's, "we have rebuilt our houses over a half dozen times". They are ready to rebuild again if the bombing ever subsides. The village leaders have never made formal complaints to the U.N. about the bombing. They say no international groups have come to hear their stories or help them. As with most Kurds I've spoken with in the past, they feel that the mountains are their only friends. "The mountains have saved our lives because we found protection in the caves". Under International Law, every human being has the right to live in their homes, has a right to their livelihood, and has the right to live without fear of attack. The villagers said they would be willing to stand up for those rights and return to their homes if we accompany them. We are in the process of drafting a Mission of Intent statement and submitting it to the U.N. and U.S. State Department. In the meantime, we will continue to build relationships with the villagers and begin preparations to accompany them. So that's the news for now.
