Big Butter

Big Butter hailed from Clovis, California. Fortunately, I lived in South Fresno which meant I could be local to them without having to live in Clovis.

The heart of Big Butter were brothers from Clovis, Mike and Timothy Biskup. Frequently, Tim also played as a drummer with Capitol Punishment, another band from Fresno.

Big Butter's music is innovative and ranges from silly to absurd to aggressive and back again without any pretention. I managed to get all the Big Butter releases before leaving Fresno County, except, regretably, Brainsled, a 60-minute Chrome Cassette release.

Big Butter's music often reminds me of The Residents, and old Devo. When I say old Devo, I mean before their first LP Are We Not Men?.

Big Butter Projects

Kill Ralph is an EP released by Lisa Suckdog. I do not own this particular EP. The scans were sent to me by another Big Butter fan (no, I am not the only one!) and it looks great. Apparently the guys from Big Butter did the art for the vinyl on this EP. I am not sure of the release date/year for this one, anybody know?

Soundwiches was a band name used by Big Butter on at least one musical project which they said was influenced by their tape Brainsled. The only reference I have found to Soundwiches is a review of two tapes in GAJOOB Magazine, from the Summer of 1991.

Big Butter Appearances

Big Butter appears on the compilation Eyesore: A Stab At The Residents, on which they cover the song Their Early Years, from the Residents LP God In Three Persons.

Big Butter also appears on Passed Normal Volumes 6&7, from Ponk Records which is currently out of print. The first pressing of this compilation numbered 1000 copies. Ponk says they would like to do a second pressing, but it will be 1998 at earliest. Big Butter does a song called The Star of Tomato on this particular compilation.
