He was accompanied by his oldest son John, for on June 23, 1679, Robert and John Lucas of "West Jersey with 12 others, signed a petition to the Governor of New York." He had married in England in 1651 to Elizabeth Coggill. His wife and seven other children came to America in July 1680 on the ship "The Content" of London. Robert Lucas Sr. was one of the nine justices of the court of Upland, which met March 14, 1682 under Governor Markham. He was elected February 20, 1683 a member of the council and assembly to meet at Philadelphia March 10, 1683, the first assembly in Pennsylvania.
He was a large landowner, and a prominent citizen in every way, his residence being in the Falls of Delaware. He and his family were Quakers and their record is complete among the archives of the church.
