The move was largely inspired by the death of his son, Henry M. Vanderburgh near Vicksburg, Mississippi during the Civil War.
A Century of Coos and Curry: History of Southwest Oregon, by Emil R. Peterson, c9152, P. 578: John K. Vanderburg to Marshfield in 1864, became a prominant early pioneer. Removed to Western Lane Co. in 1880. Wife's maiden name, Emily Culver. They had 10 children, one became Mrs. J. J. Clinkenbeard. Mr. Vanderburg died 1888, Mrs. Vanderburg died 1906.
