Profile of Robert Lucas provided by Lucas James to David Warren Robison via email, 1 Dec 1997.
Robert Lucas. Son of Edward Lucas II was born Nov 19, 1740 at his fathers' stockaded log house at Cold Springs plantation, Frederick County, Va.
Robert married Sarah Dungan, daughter of George Dungan and Mary Hellings.
Their children were Edward, William (m. Ann Lacey), George (m. Phebe Lacey), Sarah (m. John Hamilton), Asenath (m. Peter B. Stuart), Mary "Polly" (m. James Brown), Abigail.
Robert settled on the Watauga River in Western North Carolina, now Tennessee, in the late 1860's. He fought in the Revolutionary battle of Kings Mountain, N.C. He and his half-brother David were Captains, half-brother Isaac was a Major.
Half-brother Andrew made the perilous voyage to the Bluffs of the Cumberland with the Donelson party, fighting Indians instead of British. In the early Spring of 1780, Robert, David and Isaac also went to what was to become Nashville, Tenn., where all three were killed by Indians. See attached information written by a member of the Lucas family back at Elmwood, near Shepherdstown, W.Va.
The following is a verbatim copy of some sheets of Lucas Family information given to Lucas James by Dr. Robert Putz of Linden Springs, near Shepherdstown, W. Virginia, June 26, 1992.
Major Robert Lucas 1740-1781
One of Virginia's earliest and most distinguished pioneers to the land which later became the State of Tennessee.
Authorities: P. 32 of Putnam's "Tennessee". (also 171). Pp. 451-107-110-138 and 181 of Ramsey's "Annals of Tennessee". P. 48 of Tenn. Hist. Mag. for 1817-18 also 123 of Putnam (above). Pp. 42-82-89-and 204-6 of Haywood's "Civil and Political History of Tennessee", also p. 125.
P. 253 vol.3 of Roosevelt's "Winning of the West." Mrs. Rion Lucas' mss is authority for the first stockade fort item.
Robert Lucas' signature was on the Watauga Compact in 1772 in which year he was elected one of the settlements' first 13 commissioners.
In the earliest Watauga days the store of two settlers was robbed by Indians, who demanded renumeration if they gave certain land in return for the theft. Robert Lucas became a partner of these men to enable them to fulfill the compact; in this way becoming a 1/3 owner of Carter's Valley.
In 1776 Robert Lucas signed an appeal to North Carolina for much needed ammunition for the exposed frontier stations.
In 1778 he was present at the first court of Washington Co., Tenn. and was a party to the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals.
On Rob't Lucas' removal to the Cumberland (later Nashville) with Col. James Robertson's first permanent group of settlers, immediately after his brothers, Andrew and Benjamin had signed the famous "Articles of Agreement", (entered into by the settlers) an election was held. The spot was Ft. Nasborough (Nashville), and among the organizations they formed, was that of the first military company of which James Robertson was Colonel, Wm. Donaldson Liet. Col. (leader of the daring Cumberland voyage), and Robert Lucas, Major.
The night of Jan 15, 1781 Freeland's Station, (in which Major Lucas happened to be) was attacked by 40 or 50 Indians, who had quietly forced the gate lock (of the stockade). Col. James Robertson heard a noise, yelled "Indians", and the 11 men of the fort were immediately upon their feet, but Major Lucas was killed as he ran from his cabin in his shirt. An intelligent negro slave of Col. Robertson's who had accompanied him to the Cumberland on his preliminary trip, was also killed. One authority says: "The massacre of Robert Lucas was a serious loss to the colony."
The North Carolina assembly of 1783 "recited in an act of this session", that the following 11 men of whom the last named was Robert Lucas "have been at great expense, trouble, and risk, in making a purchase of land from Cherokee Indians, and that it is but just that they should have a compensation adequate to the expense, risk, and trouble, aforesaid, therefore it is enacted that 200,000 acres are hereby granted to the said 11 men, (the next two lines are so poorly copied as to be illegible) share to this fine land on the Powell and Clinch Rivers."
At the North Carolina Assembly of April and May 1784 provision was made in favor of the heirs and devisees of 63 men (of whom two were Robert and Isaac Lucas) who had gallantly died in the defense of Davidson County, deeding for each man killed 640 acres of land. Added to Robert's 1/11 of 200,000 acres the 640 and the total divided by 8 (No. of his children) each child at his death received 2,352 acres. Robert had also received a farm in Va. from his father, Edw. II.
Robert Lucas erected the first stockaded fort in Tennessee.
