Family history has it that James' father, Johnathan, had several slaves which he freed long before the Civil War, and also that James moved from Frankfort, Kentucky to Missouri because of his underground abolitionist activities.
Obituary provided by Frances L. Frasier:
James L. Clinkinbeard was born Nov. 10, 1819, in the state of Kentucky; removed to Missouri when 12 years old; crossed the plains to Oregon in 1846 and settled in the Willamette valley. He removed to Wilbur, Douglas county in 1862, was married to Mary Holman in 1849; was the father of thirteen children, ten of whom still survive. He joined the M. E. church at an early age but united with the Presbyterian church in 1882. Died Feb. 5, 1897, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. T. Woodruff, in Cleveland.
Thus another pioneer is gone to swell the throng that have passed on before. His death was very sudden; going to bed at night in usual health and was found dead in bed in the morning. Just 18 years previous to his event his wife was carried out by the tide into the ocean and drowned. Many persons are acquainted with the circumstances. Some of his daughters have been prominent school teachers in this and Coos county. They have the sympathy of the people in this community, and the consolation that he is resting in that blessed sleep from which none ever wake to weep.
The funeral services were performed by the writer at the Booth chapel and the remains interred in the Cleveland cemetery. Rev. E. M. Marstens.
Funeral Notice courtesy of Frances L. Frasier:
A Pioneer Dead. - James L. Clinkenbeard died at the residence of his son-in-law, E. T. Woodruff, at Cleveland Friday, February 5th, aged 78 years. He was the father of thirteen children, ten of whom, all grown to manhood and womanhood, survive him. He "crossed the plains" in 1846, and in 1852 settled near Wilbur where he resided for many years, and was known to all as an upright, useful citizen. The funeral was held at Cleveland at 11 o'clock a. m., yesterday, attended by many relatives and sympathizing friends.
