Introduced clinical instruction at Pennsylvania Hospital & started the Philadelphia dispensary. His MEDICAL INQUIRIES & OBSERVATIONS UPON THE DISEASES OF THE MIND (1812) was the first work on psychiatry published in the United States. Surgeon General of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Appointed by John Adams in 1797 at Treasurer of the National Mint, which he held until his death. Anti-slavery, anti-death penalty, and anti-alcohol, he fought for prison reforms, higher education for women, and free public schools for the poor.
