Michael Robison
For reasons that will become apparent as we go along Michael Robison is designated as the first of our family that we can identify. Michael is not a common name among the Scotch-Irish; it is an uncommon name among the Robisons.
The earliest trace of him that we now have is found in the Maryland Marriage Records by Barnes. These records say: "Michael Robinson married Margaret McGummery on May 24, 1733." This marriage took place in Cecil County, Maryland and the record is in Book 3 at page 14, thereby indicating that it took place at St. Stephens Parish.
I would guess that Michael was at least 21 when he married; meaning that he was born in 1714 or before. It is likely that he came to America with his parents because of the "Troubles" in Ulster in 1713-1716. At a guess his parents were a William and Jane.
Cecil County, Maryland is on the south line of Lancaster County, Pa. In an 1883 History of Lancaster County on page 854 dealing with Little Britain Township is a paragraph stating that Michael Robinson warranted 60 acres on December 29, 1748. Part of this was patened to Michael as "Robinsons Barrens" on May 19, 1767.
This section is now in Fulton Township, Lancaster County and lies north of the hamlet known as New Texas. In 1883 this land belonged to Haines Brown. This location is perhaps 10 miles north of Maryland.
Other references in published items to our Michael are:

This indicates that he was neither a Tory nor a Quaker.

Michael Robison wrote his will on June 6, 1783. It was filed on June 2, 1785, indicating that he had died in May of 1785. His will as written is copied here.

Comments on the Will and it's Inventory.
The Will is unusual in that it names the spouses of the children. Even today this is seldom done. Then it is clear that Michael was partial to his wife and his youngest daughter.
The inventory shows more than average property. If we assume a colonial pound equalled five dollars then the estate was close to $2,000.00
Children of Michael Robison
It is fair to assume that Michael Robison's children as named in his will were listen in their birth order. Having made that assumption we will take them up as follows:
1) Jean married to John Sloan. Jean - Jane - Jenny are all the same name. We know nothing more of her. She was probably named for Michaels' mother.
2) William married to Sarah. Michaels' oldest son, named, no doubt, for Michaels' father. William is our ancestor and we will take him up in the next section.
3) James married to Barbara. According to the naming pattern he was named for his mothers' father. This is the James Robinson who was living in Mahoning Township, Northumberland County, PA in 1800. This James died and his wife, Barbara Robinson was appointed as Administrator on August 18, 1804. The surities for Barbaras' appointment were Robert Simonton and James Wilson. This is the same James Robinson who served as Exectuor of his brother Isaac's estate in 1786. We do not know if James had children.
4) Abraham and his wife Sarah. Up until we knew otherwise we assumed this was the Abraham who was in Huntington County, Pa. before 1790. There are a number of the descendants of Abraham of Huntington who live in Sharpsville and Sharon, Pa. - about 20 miles from us in Cortland. These descendants tell us that their Abraham was the son of James. Thus we know nothing.
5) Isaac and his wife Mary. This is the Isaac who died in Mahoning Township, Northumberland County in 1786. He wrote his will on October 21, 1784, naming his brother, James, as executor. His Will makes no provisions for his wife indicating that she was deceased. his children are not named, but from the account we can establish that he had chilren: Michael, John, Isaac and Jean. Marian E. Gamble is descended from Isaac.
6) Joseph and his wife Margaret. Joseph appears to have remained in Little Britain Township. However, in 1826, this Joseph then living in Liberty Township, Columbia County, Pa., executed a release of his rights in Michaels' farm for $20.00. This $20.00 no doubt is the ten shillings provided for Joseph in Michaels' will. This area - Liberty Township, is now in Montour County and is the same place as both James and Isaac had resided. This part of Northumberland became a part of Columbia County and later in 1850 a part of Montour County. We know nothing more of Joseph.
7) Unnamed, deceased daughter. Robert Montgomery, the grandson mentioned in the will, was without a doubt a son of a deceased daughter. Robert was apparently an only child. No doubt this daughter was named for Margarets' mother - Michaels' mother in law.
8) Margaret the unmarried daughter in 1783. From 1819 and 1823 deeds we find that she married a Robertson; that she gave or sold Michaels' farm to her son, Robert Robertson; and that Robert Robertson sold the farm to Joshua Webster.
