[884] BIOGRAPHY: 1) According to Books of Robison by Jean Mosher Robison: (John) enlisted in Company B 133rd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers on May 5, 1864 and was honorably discharged the following 5 Sept.

BIOGRAPHY: 2) Biographical sketch of John Robison, Jr. from Books of Robison by Jean Mosher Robison:

BIOGRAPHY: John Robison Jr. born 3 August 1845 Columbiana County, Ohio was the senior partner in the firm of John Robison and Son, wholesale commission dealers in vegetables, fruit, etc., at Brazil, Indiana. He enlisted in Company B 133rd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. He joined the Army on 5 May 1864 and received honorable discharge on 5 sept following.

BIOGRAPHY: John was only nine years old when brought to Indiana by his parents. He lived at home except for the time he was in service until his marriage. John married 9 October 1871 Miss Elmira Smith who passed away nine years later in 1880. She was a native of Marion County, Indiana, and a daughter of Jackson and Hattie Ann (Darby) Smith. They were the parents of three children, one of whom died while an infant.

BIOGRAPHY: At the time of his first marriage John Robison Jr. was a farmer and also engaged on public works. In 1881 he became connected with the business of market gardening and also established a wholesale butchering business. He carried on in this business in connection with the development of his farm. He disposed of his butchering business in 1890 but continued with the market gardening until 1898 with his son Andrew. He engaged in the wholesale and commission business as dealers in vegetables, fruit, eggs, butter, and poultry. He voted with the Republican party but never sought an office. Both he and his wife were members of the Christian Church.

BIOGRAPHY: For the most part older obituaries tell of the wonderful Christian qualities of the deceased and give very little vital information. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Robison, Conklin, Hunter, Jones saved the following obituary of her uncle John Robison Jr. which was far more informative than most. Thanks to Ireta Hunter, Spencer, Baird, daughter of Elizabeth who shared this family history with us.

BIOGRAPHY: Obituary of John Robison Jr.

BIOGRAPHY: John Robison Jr. retired Commission merchant, Clay County's last surviving veteran of the Civil War, died early this morning at his home at Cottage Hill west of the city. He was in his 96th year. Mr. Robison had been the only war veteran residing in Clay County since the death of John Alexander at Bowling Green three years ago.

BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Robison was born in Columbiana County, Ohio 3 August 1845 and was a son of John and Mary (Baker) Robison. In 1854 his parents drove across country from their Ohio home to Indiana and settled in Dick Johnson Township, where the father assisted by his sons engaged in the operation of pottery. The father later located in Kansas where he died.

BIOGRAPHY: John Robison at the age of 17 years enlisted in the Union Army and served in the Civil War until its close. Four other brothers had also been Union Soldiers. Pierson, Thomas, William and Amos were the other brothers who saw service in the Army. Amos died in service in Georgia in 1864, and William became one of General McCook's scouts and was taken prisoner in one of Sherman's raids, serving nine months in the Andersonville Prison.

BIOGRAPHY: At the close of the Civil War the deceased returned home and engaged in farming west of the city. Later he embarked in the Commission business here with his oldest son, Andrew Robison, from which he retired some years ago on account of failing health.

BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Robison was married in 1871 to Miss Elmira Smith who died nine years later. In 1881 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Stough who also preceeded. He had been a member of the First Christian Church for many years and a highly respected citizen.

BIOGRAPHY: The deceased is survived by two sons and two daughters. Andrew J. and William Robison, and Mrs. Harry Race city (sic) and Mrs. Ruth McNeil of Indianapolis; also seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

BIOGRAPHY: The body was taken to Moore and Son's Funeral Home and will be returned Tuesday noon to the residence where friends may call. Funeral services will be held at the residence at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Rev. E.L. Day of Indianapolis officiating, Interrment Cottage Hill Cemetery. The firing squad of the local Legion Post will officiate at the grave.

BIOGRAPHY: The above obituary has repeated some of the earlier history of John Robison Jr. but it is important for the descendants of these early Robison ancestors to be able to read this record exactly as it was written back in 1941.
