Notes on William Robison by John Gessner:
William Robison called Uncle Billy by the family was born in 1800 in what is now Tuscarora Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. No doubt he was named for his paternal grandfather, William Robison (1735-1810). It is William who is listed as a male under 10 with his parents in the 1800 Census of Juniata Township, Cumberland County, PA.
In the 1830 census for Green Township, Columbiana County, OH, he is listed as William Robison, 1 male 20-13 and 1 female 20-30. We know this from deeds. There is no marriage record for them in the Columbiana County records. From other facts it looks like Rebecca was a Cook, the daughter of Joel and Keturah Cook, and the sister of Jacob and Werick Cook.
While the Robisons were in Green and later in Milton Township, Trumbull County, OH during the period 1826-1839, it was William who carried on the family business. The lot of the center in Greenford, the two farms in Milton plus other lots in Milton were carried in his name alone. Nothing was carried in the father's name.
In 1832 William went to Warren (the county seat of Trumbull County), and secured a marriage license for his sister, Mary Ann Robison, and his wife's brother, Jacob Cook.
In 1836 William went to Warren and secured a marriage license for his wife's brother, Werick Cook and Ann Cline, she of Milton. Werick was under age, so William filed the consent of his mother, Keturah Cook. Joel did not consent because he could not write his name. Rebecca, William's wife, could not sign her name either, and on the many deeds required signed with an X.
Regarding the move of 1839, Silas Robison wrote that "My brothers William and Joseph left Newton Falls in Trumbull County about the same time as we did and got there the same day." Here was Meigs County, OH. Further quoting Silas: "My brother, William bought the land just below Dexter, now owned (1898) by M. L. Vale, which consisted of 90 acres. He put up a cabin on the little eminence between the bridge and the cut. Uncle Billy as he was familiarly called, sold this land to Jacob Cook, who lived on the place a while and then sold out to William Longsreth. My brother, William, died on land now owned by Homer Hill and in a house formerly occupied by John Robinson."
William appears in the 1840 census for Salem Township, Meigs County, OH as William Robinson - 2 males under 5, 1 male 30-40, 2 females under 4 and one female 30-40. He was not found in the 1850 census for Meigs County, but it is certain that he was there. He died sometime after 1851 when his youngest child was born in 1860 when he is not listed with the family in the census. The 1860 census for Rutland Township, Meigs County has:
R. Robinson (Rebecca) F 52 Born Ohio
Elizabeth Robinson 22 Born Ohio
John 18 Born Ohio
Marian 16 Born Ohio
Benton 12 Born Ohio
Orfy 9 Born Ohio
Close by:
Z. Robinson 25 Born Ohio (Zeddock, a son)
Gasper 6 Born Ohio
Becca 3 Born Ohio
Becca A. 1 Born Ohio
1870 Census Rutland Township:
Rebecca Robinson 62 Born Ohio
Benton Robinson 22 Born Ohio
Close by:
John Robinson 29 Born Ohio
Martha Robinson 23 Born Ohio
Isaac Robinson 7 Born Ohio
Miles Robinson 3 Born Ohio
Rosella Robinson 1 Born Ohio
There is a death record for Rebecca Robinson who died December 28, 1878 at Rutland, OH - aged 70 born in Columbiana County, OH.
There are no obituaries for William nor for Rebecca. There are no estates for them. No cemetery records either. Apparently neither William nor Rebecca owned any land after they sold the 90 acres.
When Joseph (1777-1841) wrote his Will he named his sons "William and Joseph" as Executors.
In 1900 John Robinson wrote a leter to a Meigs County newspaper containing the following facts:
1. John was then living in Tingley, Iowa.
2. John was born February 22, 1841 near Dexter in Salem Township, Meigs County, OK.
3. He married Martha Nelson, daughter of John Nelson, on July 19, 1862.
4. He served in the Civil War from September 12, 1862 until July 3, 1865 - Co. K, 7th Ohio Volunteers Cavalry.
