From an Oregon Newspaper article sent by Frances L. Frasier:
Mabel Krohn
by Debby Norman
N.R. Staff Writer
When Mabel Krohn was born on a farm 14 miles northwest of Roseburg 91 years ago, getting to town could mean a day's journey.
"The streets of Roseburg used to be so muddy. No paved streets and no gravel. We had horses and wagons and in the wintertime the ruts used to be nearly up to the hubs," she remembers.
Mrs. Krohn, born Mabel Woodruff, celebrated her 91st birthday last December. She's quick to point out her mother lived to be 99 and an aunt 100, so being 91 isn't that extraordinary. But not many people are left who can remember her maiden name.
"Very few people are alive that I grew up with," she said.
Mrs. Krohn has spent all of her 91 years in Douglas County, 50 of them on the donation land claim taken out by her grandfather's brother. She's been a farm girl, a student, a farm wife and a widow, and she's watched the changes that have come with time.
The farm was bordered on one side by the river and on the other by the county road. It's gone now, like most of the rest of the world Mrs. Krohn grew up with.
"I lived on that ranch for 50 years...you wouldn't know the place anymore," she said. "It's all cut up into little houses."
Mrs. Krohn now lives in a Roseburg apartment. Her son and daughter also live in the area, but Mrs. Krohn gets along fine on her own.
"I've been taking good care of myself, getting lots of walks," she says.
Mrs. Krohn has a precise memory for dates. She quickly points out some of the landmarks of her life: her birth on Dec. 8, 1887; the birth of her son Ralph on Jun 27, 1911; the birth of her daughter Ethel in April 27, 1914; and her husband John Krohn's death in February 1960. She's lived alone as a widow since.
The years that define her life best, however are her first 50 - the time she sepnt on the Cleveland farm.
The farm, Mrs. Krohn says, is tied in intimately with her pioneer roots. Both sets of grandparents crossed the prairies in covered wagons. Her grandfather's brother took out the donation land claim, and her grandfather bought it from him.
Mrs. Krohn attended the first eight grades in a country school in Cleveland, then spent two years in Roseburg High School, which then was located near the current site of Rose School and had about 80 students. Standards were a bit more demanding then, she said.
"You had to behave in school. You sat in your seat and if you did any whispering you go punished for it."
From high school, Mabel Woodruff went to a state normal school in Drain and graduated in 1908. She could have gone into teaching, she said, but by the time John Krohn was on the scene. They were married in 1909.
John, Mrs. Krohn's husband for 51 years, had come to Oregon from Wisconsin to be a farmer. After her father died, she and John took over the Cleveland ranch and ran it together until 1938.
Mrs. Krohn says there were conveniences, such as a hand-cranked washing machine, even then. The journey to Roseburg began to be less of an ordeal when the Krohns got their first automobile in about 1918. But a farm wife still had a lot to do: raising the kids, coooking for the hired help and doing the housework.
"It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed it," she said.
Mrs. Krohn remembers the Great Depression which spelled the end of her life on the farm.
"The farmers got hurt first; the prices just dropped out of sight," she says. The Krohns struggled along for a while, then sold the farm in 1938 and moved into town, where John got work in a mill.
"It was pretty hard," says Mrs. Krohn simply. "That was home for me."
These days, Mrs. Krohn keeps busy with her housework and her church. She has a sister, 79, who lives in Woodburn. (Despite the longevity of the women in the family, she says, her father and two brothers all died young.) She has three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She's traveled a bit, she says, but she always comes home.
"I never wanted to live any place else but Oregon. I never had any desire to be anyplace but Douglas County."
