Wilburs' father was a carpenter 2 CONC and circuit preacher and would often move, help build/start a church, 2 CONC then move again. Wilbur never went by his first name and was generally 2 CONC called F. W. Robison formally and Wilbur colloquially. 2 CONT 2 CONT Wilburs' father did not much value education, and would not let Wilbur 2 CONC attend high school. When Wilbur was about 18, his father moved but Wilbur 2 CONC refused to move with him unless he was allowed to attend high school. His 2 CONC father relented and let him attend school. Wilbur ran the 220 and 440 and 2 CONC excelled in track and field. 2 CONT 2 CONT In his youth and while in school he worked in a pharmacy. Back then, 2 CONC pharmacists would mix their own drugs and chemicals and deliver them to 2 CONC customers. Wilbur worked along with a pharmacist and learned much of the 2 CONC trade. He told his grandson David that he used to deliver chunks of 2 CONC cyanide to steel workers and would always warn them to be careful with 2 CONC it. He said they would take it in bare hands and throw it to each other 2 CONC without any semblence of safety. Once, when he told them to be careful, 2 CONC one of them took a piece of the cyanide and licked it as if to prove a 2 CONC point. Wilbur said it was not long before the man was on the ground, and 2 CONC that he barely survived. 2 CONT 2 CONT Because of his pharmaceutical experience, he was able to skip many of the 2 CONC requisite science and chemistry classes. 2 CONT 2 CONT Wilbur attended the University of California Berkeley, majoring in civil 2 CONC engineering. Before he graduated he was working as an engineer during a 2 CONC summer. While working on a bridge he and a friend were in the lobby of 2 CONC their hotel looking through some kaleidoscopes when a young woman seemed 2 CONC to show some curiosity. Wilbur met his wife Virginia that day. She was 2 CONC there teaching school. 2 CONT 2 CONT Since he was already gainfully employed, Wilbur considered keeping his 2 CONC job, but Virginia would not marry him unless he went back and finished 2 CONC his degree, which he did. 2 CONT 2 CONT Wilbur worked his entire career as a Civil Engineer in California. He 2 CONC helped build bridges all over the state. The highlight of his career, 2 CONC however, and that which gave him the most pride was his work on the 2 CONC Oakland/San Francisco Bay Bridge. Wilbur worked on the project from the 2 CONC very beginning, helping with the triangulations and soundings from boats, 2 CONC and later inspecting the thousands of rivets, leaving the project only 2 CONC when it was time for the asphalt to be laid. The bridge project came in 2 CONC ahead of schedule and under budget. Wilbur was interviewed for the 50 2 CONC year anniversary of the building of the bridge. 2 CONT 2 CONT A 32 degree mason of the Ancient and Accepted order of Scottish Rite. A 2 CONC lifelong republican who voted for Bill Clinton due to his disgust with 2 CONC George Herbert Walker Bush, Sr. who, incidentally, was the 6th cousin, 2 CONC one time removed, of Wilbur's wife Virginia. 2 CONT 2 CONT Wilbur and his wife used to travel the world extensively, taking 2 CONC bi-annual vacations to exotic places, and generally living their summers 2 CONC at the log cabin he had built at Lake Tahoe. After the death of his wife, 2 CONC Wilbur preferred staying at home and his lifelong love of sports was 2 CONC renewed. He would often be found watching baseball or football, college 2 CONC or pro, and enjoying every minute of it. 2 CONT 2 CONT Wilbur was diabetic for the last 20 or so years of his life and rode his 2 CONC stationary bicycle 3 miles a day until age 90. He died at the age of 92 2 CONC in a convelescent hospital in Fort Bragg, California near where his son 2 CONC David daughter-in-law Gloria lived. 1 SOUR @S8@ 2 QUAY 3 1 SOUR @S4@ 2 QUAY 3 1 CHAN 2 DATE 21 APR 2003 3 TIME 11:16:18 0 @I9@ INDI 1 NAME Virginia Adelaide /Vanderburgh/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 6 APR 1907 2 PLAC San Francisco, San Francisco County, California 2 SOUR @S9@ 3 _APPLIES_TO DATE_AND_PLACE 3 QUAY 3 1 DEAT 2 DATE 26 SEP 1989 2 PLAC Greenhaven Country Place, Sacramento, Sacramento County, California 2 SOUR @S10@ 3 _APPLIES_TO DATE_AND_PLACE 3 QUAY 3 2 CAUS Alzheimers Dementia 1 BURI 2 DATE 29 SEP 1989 2 PLAC East Lawn Cemetery, Sacramento, Sacramento County, California 2 SOUR @S10@ 3 _APPLIES_TO DATE_AND_PLACE 3 QUAY 3 1 FAMS @F7@ 1 SOUR @S9@ 2 _APPLIES_TO DATE_AND_PLACE 2 QUAY 3 1 CHAN 2 DATE 30 AUG 2002 3 TIME 21:23:13 0 @I10@ INDI 1 NAME Frank Sylvanus /Robison/ 2 NPFX Reverand 2 NSFX Senior 1 TITL Senior 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 30 APR 1876 2 PLAC Marysville, Seward County, Nebraska 2 SOUR @S11@ 3 NOTE Lists Marysville, Missouri as his place of birth. No one could tell me about his 2 CONC parents or identify his brothers and sister, if any. Edward declared in 2 CONC both the 1850 and 1860 census that he had been born in Pennsylvania in 2 CONC 1818. 2 CONT 2 CONT About 1990 it became clear that Edward was the son of a Joseph who had 2 CONC been in Milton Township, Trumbull County, Ohio from 1831 to 1839. 2 CONT 2 CONT Where were Edward and Joseph in 1818? In order to get an answer we made a 2 CONC list of all Josephs (Robison, Robinson, Robeson, etc.) in the 1820 census 2 CONC for Ohio and Pennsylvania. By checking the numerous listings by ages, 2 CONC location and other factors, the search narrowed down to two Josephs, both 2 CONC of whom were in Perry County, PA. One of these was in Saville Township; 2 CONC the other was in Toboyne Township. Checking further we found both in the 2 CONC same locations for 1810 and 1800. 2 CONT 2 CONT By this time we had established that William of 1735-1810 and his wife, 2 CONC Sarah, of Perry County had a son, Joseph. We concluded that this was the 2 CONC Joseph who lived in Saville Township. 2 CONT 2 CONT Further confusion came into the picture when it turned out that the 2 CONC Joseph of Toboyne Township had parents named William and Sarah. This 2 CONC William came from Dauphin County and was a part of the early Robinsons 2 CONC covered by Engle. This Sarah was Sarah Caldwell who died in 1785. 2 CONT 2 CONT Checking further we come up with more facts that make the choice of 2 CONC Joseph of Saville as the father of Edward more conclusive. These were: 2 CONT 2 CONT 1. The Joseph of Toboyne was in the 1830 census fo Toboyne. The Joseph of 2 CONC Saville was gone. We know that Joseph, the father of Edward, was in Green 2 CONC Township, Columbiana County, OH for the 1830 census. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2. In the 1820 census Joseph of Toboyne was listed as in agriculture, 2 CONC while Joseph of Saville was not. Our Joseph did not farm - he was a 2 CONC weaver. 2 CONT 2 CONT 3. The descendants of Joseph of Toboyne claim that their Joseph moved to 2 CONC Huntington County, PA after 1830 and died there. 2 CONT 2 CONT Jumping now to 1872 we must address the problem of Joseph, the father of 2 CONC Edward, being born in Ireland. The problem is clearly stated in the 2 CONC obituary of Joseph's wife, Elizabeth Hamell Robinson. This obituary 2 CONC appeared in the "Meigs County Telegraph", Pomeroy, OH dated October 7, 2 CONC 1872. It reads as follows: 2 CONT 2 CONT Death of the Oldest Person in Rutland, Ohio 2 CONT 2 CONT The funeral obsequies of the oldest person in Rutland Township, were 2 CONC attended to on Saturday last. Her name before marriage was Elizabeth 2 CONC Hamell. She was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, February 19, 1777, 2 CONC and consequently, was in the ninety-sixth year of her age. She was 2 CONC married to Mr. Joseph Robison, a native of Ireland, and a weaver by 2 CONC trade. He came to Philadelphia when about 21 years of age, and in this 2 CONC city they were married. They subsequently moved to Maryland, then to 2 CONC Columbiana County, Ohio, where they remained fifteen years. While here 2 CONC Mrs. Robison made a profession of her faith in Christ, and united with 2 CONC the church, in Green, now Anglaize County, and has ever since maintained 2 CONC the Christian profession. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1839 the family removed to Rutland Township, and, in 1841, Mr. Robison 2 CONC died in the sixty-fourth year of his age. Mrs. Robison remained a widow 2 CONC for thirty-one years, and has lived the most of the time with her son, 2 CONC Mr. Silas Robison, where she died. She had a family of ten children, all 2 CONC of whom are living except four. One son, Rev. Joseph Robison, has, for 2 CONC some years, been a minister of the gospel. At one time she and seven of 2 CONC her sisters were widows; but they are now all dead, Mrs. Robison being 2 CONC the last one. She has, however, one brother living in Salem, Columbiana 2 CONC County (Ohio). 2 CONT 2 CONT She retained her mental faculties remarkably well to the last; but, for 2 CONC five or six years, she has been unable to labor, and, for the last five 2 CONC or six weeks of her life was confined to her bed. In addition to the 2 CONC infirmities of age, she had for some time been afflicted with a cancer 2 CONC upon her hand; but she bore her sufferings with Christian patience. 2 CONT 2 CONT Religious services were conducted by Rev. Selah H. Barrett, after which 2 CONC she was interred upon the premises of her soil. On the morning of her 2 CONC burial, the remains of her husband, in accordance with her request, were 2 CONC removed from their long resting place, about half a mile distant, and 2 CONC buried with her in the same grave. The scene was solemn and impressive. 2 CONC The coffin in which he had been buried, was made of walnut and was in a 2 CONC good state of preservation, but nothing remained of the corpse except 2 CONC bones, which laid in their natural form except for the skull. This was 2 CONC not found in the original position, having, as is supposed, floated away 2 CONC upon the entrance of water into the coffin. 2 CONT 2 CONT So what is the problem about Perry County? The problem is solved if the 2 CONC printed obituary is correct. 2 CONT 2 CONT It is my position that the obituary is wrong; that our ancesters lived a 2 CONC lie, and that Joseph and Elizabeth left Perry County, PA; changed their 2 CONC name from Robinson to Robison, and concealed their history, all because 2 CONC of debt. 2 CONT 2 CONT In order to show the factual basis for this position it is necessary to 2 CONC go into some detail. 2 CONT 2 CONT From the obituary, it would appear that Joseph and Elizabeth's children 2 CONC were born in Maryland or in Ohio. 2 CONT 2 CONT To illustrate where the children said they were born we will make a 2 CONC chart, showing the children's names and birth places as declared in the 2 CONC census returns 1850 on: 2 CONT 2 CONT Name 1850 1860 1870 1880 2 CONT 2 CONT William ? dead dead dead 2 CONT Sarah PA PA ? ? 2 CONT Daniel MD MD ? PA 2 CONT John PA PA MD PA 2 CONT Joseph Jr. MD ? PA dead 2 CONT Mary Ann MD OH MD dead 2 CONT Thomas dead dead dead dead 2 CONT Edward PA PA dead dead 2 CONT Silas PA PA PA PA 2 CONT Harriett Ann OH dead dead dead 2 CONT Elizabeth ? ? ? ? 2 CONT 2 CONT The chart proves only that there was a lot of confusion. If anything it 2 CONC disputes the idea that Joseph and Elizabeth were early in Maryland. 2 CONT 2 CONT To further disprove the obituary we go now to the 1830 Tax Duplicate for 2 CONC Saville Township, Perry County, PA. There are twelve Robinson-Robison 2 CONC entries on this list including: 2 CONT 2 CONT Joseph Robison - absent with Kochenderfer as tenant - 400 acres - value 2 CONC 400.00 2 CONT 2 CONT Alexander Robison - Weaver - 80.00 value. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Kochenderfer family obtained ownership of this 400 acres in a tax 2 CONC sale and later built substantial buildings on it. This is northwest one 2 CONC mile from Ickesburg. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Alexander is from the Robisons north of the mountain and who 2 CONC apparently took over Joseph's trade. In 1839 this same man, then over 2 CONC seventy years of age, appeared in Milton and looked after the real estate 2 CONC until Edward reappeared in 1843. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the 1832 partition action involving Williams' heirs it is stated that 2 CONC Joseph's interest in William's farm had been sold on execution for debt. 2 CONC The sheriff sold it to Thomas McKinzie - this was a brother of George 2 CONC Robison's wife. The partition action says Joseph "is not in Perry 2 CONC County", yet when Michael Robison files his account he shows he paid 2 CONC Joseph his share. Then we have these two publications: 2 CONT 2 CONT The Perry Forrester - Thursday, July 10, 1828: Will be exposed to sale by 2 CONC public outcry, at the court house in Bloomfield, on Monday the 4th day of 2 CONC August next, at ten O'clock a.m. the following real estate to wit: A 2 CONC tract of land situated in Saville Township, containing about 400 acres, 2 CONC be the same more or less, bounded by lands of Thomas Drumgold, James 2 CONC Rine, James Duffield, Samuel Hench and the Tuscarora Mountain, about 70 2 CONC acres of which are cleared, three acres of meadow, having a small apple 2 CONC orchard and other fruit trees, with a log dwelling house and other out 2 CONC houses thereon erected - seized and taken in execution as the property of 2 CONC Joseph ROBISON. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Perry Forrester - Thursday, April 8, 1830: By virtue of a warrant 2 CONC from under the hands & seal of Office of the Commissioners of Perry 2 CONC County, and to me directed, will be exposed to sale by public vendue (an 2 CONC auction sale), on Monday the 14th day of June, 1830, at the court house 2 CONC in Bloomfield, and continue by adjournment, from time to time, until the 2 CONC following tracts of unseated land (a tax category of persons being taxed 2 CONC who owned land but did not live on the particular parcel), situate in 2 CONC Perry County, are sold... to defray the arrearages of the County and Road 2 CONC Tax due thereon, and costs. J. Wilson, Treasurer. 2 CONT 2 CONT 400 Acres Joseph ROBISON, owner Taxes - $1.06 2 CONT 2 CONT There are also entries in the Sheriff's Docket, Perry County, PA dated 2 CONC January 1, 1829 and July 16, 1829 relating to the sale of lands of Joseph 2 CONC Robison of Saville Township. 2 CONT 2 CONT You must remember that in this period of history (1820-1830), there was 2 CONC no bankruptcy. Likewise creditors could take the clothes off your back 2 CONC and take the food off your table. 2 CONT 2 CONT Silas Robison, the youngest son of Joseph and Elizabeth declared that he 2 CONC had been born in 1822 in Fayette County, PA, at a location west of 2 CONC Uniontown and just off the National Road, now U.S. 40. 2 CONT 2 CONT From all of this it is easy to speculate that our Joseph was in Saville 2 CONC Township, Perry County, PA for the 1820 census; that about 1820 Joseph 2 CONC and his family left because of debt; that they left their real estate 2 CONC with Kochenderfer; that Joseph and his family went south on to Maryland, 2 CONC and once there they went west on the National Road. 2 CONT 2 CONT No doubt they were in Ohio by 1823. They do not appear on any tax lists 2 CONC probably because they had nothing. In the 1850 census Harriett Ann 2 CONC declared that she was 33 years old and born in Ohio. This would mean 2 CONC being born in Ohio in 1817; this is not likely. She tried to make herself 2 CONC older, but it is quite possible that she ws born in or near East 2 CONC Fairfield, Columbiana County, OH in 1823. East Fairfield suggests itself 2 CONC as Sarah's husband came from there and there were members of the Cook 2 CONC family there. 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1825 Joseph and his family had moved to Green Township, Columbiana 2 CONC County, OH. This location became Mahoning county in 1845; the center of 2 CONC the township where our people lived is now called Greenford. We know they 2 CONC were there in 1825 because Joseph was on the personal property tax list 2 CONC for 1826 with two cattle and one horse. Listing day was the first of the 2 CONC year. 2 CONT 2 CONT They lived on the "school lands" and owned no real estate. Sarah Robison, 2 CONC Joseph's oldest daughter, married William Bradfield of East Fairfield on 2 CONC October 5, 1826. Shortly following this, John Robison married Mary Baker 2 CONC on October 18, 1827. William Robison, the oldest son, married Rebecca 2 CONC Cook about the same time. 2 CONT 2 CONT The 1830 census for Green Township shows theree households - next to each 2 CONC other. They were: 2 CONT 2 CONT William Robinson 1 male 20-30 2 CONT 1 female 20-30 2 CONT John Robinson 1 male under 5 2 CONT 1 male 5-10 2 CONT 1 male 20-30 2 CONT 1 male 30-40 (Daniel) 2 CONT 1 female 20-30 2 CONT Joseph Robinson 1 male 10-15 2 CONT 1 male 15-20 2 CONT 1 male 50-60 2 CONT 1 female 5-10 2 CONT 1 female 15-20 2 CONT 1 female 50-60 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1830 William Robison, the oldest son, took a deed for a small lot at 2 CONC the northeast corner of the square in Greenford. It was too small to have 2 CONC held all three families; perhaps it was a trade location for Joseph. In 2 CONC 1831 William and Rebecca deeded the lot to others. 2 CONT 2 CONT Why the move to Greenford? The obvious answer is the Cook family. There 2 CONC were Cooks in East Fairfield; and Jacob and Elizabeth Cook, together with 2 CONC Lewis Baker, owned most of the center of Green Township. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1831 the Joseph Robison clan all moved to Milton Township, Trumbull 2 CONC County, OH. This was a movement to the northwest of about seventeen 2 CONC miles. William Robison, apparently as agent or cover man for his father 2 CONC held the titles to two farms totaling 1818 acres. 2 CONT 2 CONT In addition to the Robison households, Jacob and Elizabeth Cook and their 2 CONC large family came along. Although the titles were kept in William's name, 2 CONC the land was divided for taxes as follows: 2 CONT 2 CONT William Robison 58 acres 2 CONT Joseph Robison 20 acres 2 CONT John Robison 42 acres 2 CONT Jacob Cook 61 acres 2 CONT 2 CONT The personal property tax lists show the following prior to 1838: 2 CONT 2 CONT Joseph Robinson 2 cows 2 CONT Joseph Robison, Jr. 2 cows 2 CONT John Robinson 2 cows 2 CONT William Robinson 1 cow 2 CONT 2 CONT In Milton two more marriages occurred to complicate the picture. On 2 CONC November 26, 1832, Mary Ann Robison, the second oldest daughter of Joseph 2 CONC and Elizabeth, married Jacob Cook, a brother of Rebecca Cook Robison, 2 CONC William's wife. This Jacob and his sister, Rebecca, were the children of 2 CONC Joel Cook who was a brother of the Jacob Cook who came from Green to 2 CONC Milton. Joseph Robison, Jr. married Nancy Cook, daughter of Jacob and 2 CONC Elizabeth Cook on November 18, 1834. (Note: according to Jane Fletcher 2 CONC Fiske's book, Nancy Cook was daughter of Thomas Cook and Elizabeth White. 2 CONC John Gessner had already passed away when I found this excellent Cook 2 CONC resource - David Warren Robison, August, 2002). To this then add the 2 CONC statement from Jean Robison of Coffeyville, Kansas that she has a 2 CONC document indicating that Mary Baker, wife of John Robison, was a niece of 2 CONC the Jacob Cook who had been in Green. 2 CONT 2 CONT Why the move to Milton? The answer is employment. About 1830, the 2 CONC construction of the Ohio-Pennsylvania canal started. John Cole, a brother 2 CONC of Arminda Cole, the wife of our Edward, declared that he had cut stone 2 CONC with the Robisons on the canal from Akron on east. It appears that 2 CONC William, Joseph Jr. and Edward all worked as stone masons, while John, 2 CONC Thomas and the others did other work. John, William, and Joseph Jr. 2 CONC bought other parcels in Newton Falls to be closer to the work. 2 CONT 2 CONT There was another reason for the move and that was the presence of John 2 CONC Noland in Milton. The Nolands had been neighbors in Perry County, PA. 2 CONC There was a connection with John Noland that we cannot define today. When 2 CONC Thomas Robison died in 1838 he was buried with the Nolands in the Vaughn 2 CONC Cemetery in Milton. 2 CONT 2 CONT In about 1838 the canal work halted. The State of Ohio had run out of 2 CONC money. This caused the break up of the joint housing venture. William and 2 CONC Rebecca, she signing by mark, sold off the 188 acres in 1838 and 1839. 2 CONC The twenty acres where old Joseph and Elizabeth lived were sold to Jacob 2 CONC Harroff of Austintown who did not file the deed. 2 CONT 2 CONT Alexander Robinson and his wife, Mary Moy Robison, now appear in Milton - 2 CONC they occupy the twenty acre parcel; are there for the 1840 census; and 2 CONC stay there until Edward returned there about 1841. (Alex. and wife, Mary 2 CONC Moy are not our kin folk.) 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1839 Joseph, Elizabeth, and all the children are gone. To illustrate 2 CONC this we use the following chart to show where they lived: 2 CONT 2 CONT Name 1840 Location 2 CONT 2 CONT Joseph & Elizabeth Meigs County, OH 2 CONT William & Rebecca Meigs County, OH 2 CONT Sarah East Fairfield 2 CONT Daniel Meigs County, OH 2 CONT John & Mary Greenford, OH 2 CONT Joseph Jr. & Nancy Meigs County, OH 2 CONT Mary Ann & Jacob Cook Meigs County, OH 2 CONT Thomas dead - buried in Milton 2 CONT Edward missing until 1841 2 CONT Silas Meigs County, OH 2 CONT Harriett Ann Indiana 2 CONT Elizabeth Meigs County, OH 2 CONT Jacob & Elizabeth Cook Greenford, OH 2 CONT 2 CONT So now we have most of the family in Meigs County, OH. This is an area 2 CONC along the Ohio River in the southern part of the state. Why there? The 2 CONC Robinson families of central Columbiana County headed by Jonah and Keziah 2 CONC moved at the same time, settling in northern Gallia County some five 2 CONC miles from the new location for Joseph and Elizabeth; there were already 2 CONC Cooks there. The western part of Meigs County is hilly, wooded, and has 2 CONC numerous runs or streams. It is not a rich area today. It is a part of 2 CONC Appalachia. 2 CONT 2 CONT It is now time to quote in full the autobiography of Silas Robinson 2 CONC written for the newspaper on December 26, 1898: 2 CONT 2 CONT Langsville, O., Dec. 26, 1898. 2 CONT 2 CONT Ed. Leader: - Being interested in the letters that are appearing in the 2 CONC Log Cabin department, I send you herewith my mite to help swell the 2 CONC general contribution. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was born at Chestnut Ridge, Cecil County, PA., Oct. 30, 1821. When I 2 CONC was about five years old my parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Robinson, 2 CONC removed to Columbiana County, Ohio, stopping on school land only a mile 2 CONC from Green Village and five miles from Salem, one of the somewhat noted 2 CONC towns of the state. 2 CONT 2 CONT My parents remained in Columbiana County for seven years, but my father 2 CONC having purchased a piece of land in Trumbull County, Ohio, we removed to 2 CONC this state, the land he purchased being in Milton Township, a distance of 2 CONC 10 miles from Youngstown. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the year 1838 I saw a man named McKisson, hung for killing his 2 CONC brother's wife with an ax, the out growth of jealousy. Jacob Cook lived 2 CONC within about three miles of the scene of this bloody tragedy. 2 CONT 2 CONT On the 12th of March, with the snow knee deep, we left Trumbull County, 2 CONC stopping about three weeks at the home of my brother-in-law, William 2 CONC Bradfield, who lived near East Fairfield, Columbiana County. We went from 2 CONC there to Wellsville on the Ohio about the middle of April, a distance of 2 CONC about 18 miles, and took one of the line boats in the dusk of the 2 CONC evening, landing at Sheffield, then consisting of only two or three 2 CONC buildings, about three o'clock next day. 2 CONT 2 CONT My father and brother-in-law, Mr. Bradfield, had been down the fall 2 CONC before and bought half section of land at $2.50 an acre the purchase 2 CONC having been made of the Putnams of Marietta. 2 CONT 2 CONT We put up for the night at Langsville with the father of Benjamin Lang, 2 CONC and the next day uncle Johnny McVey hauled our household goods out from 2 CONC Sheffield to a cabin of Josiah Maloon's place. Here we stayed a few days 2 CONC until my father put up a small shanty in which to live. This shanty stood 2 CONC near where I now live. I have never moved but once, and that was from the 2 CONC log cabin into the house I now occupy. My father lived only a few years 2 CONC after moving here, and died, I think in 1842. My mother lived 31 years 2 CONC and a day longer than my father, and was 95 years of age when she 2 CONC departed this life. 2 CONT 2 CONT When I came here it was wilderness from my place to the old Woods or 2 CONC Giles Mill, there being not even a footpath between the two places. 2 CONC William Longstreth came there, I think, the same year we came to Meigs 2 CONC County. I remember well when Mr. Longstreth came. His son Maurice was, at 2 CONC that time, quite a little boy. Robert Folden lived then on Parker Run, or 2 CONC came soon after. Uncle Sammy McKnight and John Craig lived on what is now 2 CONC Robert M. Davis homestead. The Davises came to this county after we got 2 CONC here. I think that William Anderson was the only one living in what is 2 CONC known as the Grass Run region, his place of abode being what is now known 2 CONC as the Ellison Anderson estate. 2 CONT 2 CONT IN THE DEXTER NEIGHBORHOOD 2 CONT 2 CONT When we came here lived Alex Vonschriltz and Isaac Woods. John Nelson, 2 CONC the father of William Nelson, lived where William now lives. Isaac Woods 2 CONC lived on the place on Dexter Creek, now owned by G. M. Wiseman. 2 CONT 2 CONT My brothers, William and Joseph left Newton Falls in Trumbull County 2 CONC about the same time we did and got here the same day. My brother William 2 CONC bought the land just below Dexter, now owned by M. L. Vale, which 2 CONC consisted of 90 acres. He put up a cabin on the little eminence between 2 CONC the bridge and cut. "Uncle Billy", as he was familiarly called, sold this 2 CONC land to Jacob Cook, who lived for a time on the place and then sold out 2 CONC to William Longstreth. My brother, William, died on land now owned by 2 CONC Homer Hilla and in a house formerly occupied by John Robison. 2 CONT 2 CONT Richard Amos came soon after and settled, I think, on Parker's Run, while 2 CONC his brother Tom settled on Grass Run. About this time Dr. Ellison Brown 2 CONC took up his abode on Grass Run. John Smith, wife and Uncle Erastus 2 CONC Waterman came to Leading Creek, and then Jack and Uncle Billy Saxton as 2 CONC did also Dr. John Hugg and others. 2 CONT 2 CONT THE BRALEY MILL 2 CONT 2 CONT In this neighborhood lived Amos, the father of Hattwell, Ruel and Amos 2 CONC Braley, the Stevenses and others. The mill was put up, I think, a year or 2 CONC two after we came here. It was built by Ansel Braley. Both sawing and 2 CONC grinding were done, and for years it did splendid work. 2 CONT 2 CONT RAFTING 2 CONT 2 CONT In the spring for six successive years, I took a raft from this mill down 2 CONC to the mouth of the creek and then down the Ohio River to Cincinnati. I 2 CONC went out usually on the March Rise, but sometimes had to wait for the 2 CONC necessary water in April or May. 2 CONT 2 CONT My raft consisted of stuff sawed out by the Braley brothers at the mill, 2 CONC the principle part of which was scantling 4 inches square, out of which 2 CONC was made bed posts. I usually took two rafts out at a time, some 12 to 15 2 CONC thousand feet. I had four mill dams to run - Langsville, Smith's, 2 CONC Bingham's and Skinner's. At one time I took about 24,000 feet of pine 2 CONC lumber, and inch and a quarter thick. 2 CONT 2 CONT I didn't usually have much trouble in getting out of Leading Creek. It 2 CONC took about three days and two nights to float down to Cincinatti. I got 2 CONC about $9 a thousand for bedstead stuff and about $13 for yellow pine. 2 CONT 2 CONT I had a pretty rough experience one night in floating, down about 2 CONC Portsmouth. It was foggy - I couldn't see anything and I couldn't land. 2 CONC Occasionally the raft would rake against the bank brush and then I would 2 CONC drift out into the river again. I endeavored to keep my bearings by 2 CONC throwing coal in the direction I supposed the bank to be. In this 2 CONC uncertain way I drifted in the fog all night and couldn't see a thing 2 CONC till 8 or 9 o'clock next day. My rafting was done in the 40's and 50's. 2 CONT 2 CONT I have jumped many a time with John Smith, the father of the editor of 2 CONC the Leader. He was one of the most active men and as quick as a cat. I 2 CONC could beat him in a standing jump, but he was too much for me in a run. 2 CONT 2 CONT My wife's name is Chloe Percy. My son, Rodney, died at the age of 18 2 CONC years, 6 months and 14 days. 2 CONT 2 CONT This is all for the time. I should like to hear from others of this 2 CONC neighborhood. 2 CONT 2 CONT SILAS ROBINSON 2 CONT 2 CONT By the time Joseph had arrived in Meigs County he apparently decided that 2 CONC it was now safe for him to own property. He owned about 100 acres when he 2 CONC died in 1841. 2 CONT 2 CONT Joseph left a Will and we quote from it for this record: 2 CONT 2 CONT WILL 2 CONT 2 CONT "In the name of the Benevolent Father of all, I Joseph Robison of Rutland 2 CONC Township, Meigs County, Ohio do make and publish this my last will and 2 CONC testament. 2 CONT 2 CONT Item the 1st. The cemetery 2 CONC is an acre or two of steep hill, mowed and containing many markers. Silas 2 CONC and his family are there too. They subsequently moved to Maryland; then to 2 CONC Columbiana County, Ohio, where they remained fifteen years. While here 2 CONC Mrs. Robison made a profession of her faith in Christ, and united with 2 CONC the church, in Green, now Auglaize County, and has ever since maintained 2 CONC the Christian profession. 2 CONT 2 CONT DEATH: In 1839 the family removed to Rutland Township, and, in 1941, mr. 2 CONC Robison died in the sixty-fourth year of his age. Mrs. R. Remained a 2 CONC widow for thirty-one years, and has lived the most of the time with her 2 CONC son, Mr. Silas Robison, where she died. She had a family of ten children, 2 CONC all of whom are living except four. One son, Rev. Joseph Robison, has, 2 CONC for some years, been a minister of the gospel. She has, however, one brother living in Salem, Columbiana 2 CONC County. 2 CONT 2 CONT DEATH: She retained her mental faculties remarkably well to the last; 2 CONC but, for five or si years, she has been unable to labor, and, for the 2 CONC last five or six weeks of her life, was confined to her bed. In addition 2 CONC to the infirmaties of age, she had for some time been afflicted with a 2 CONC cancer upon her hand; but she bore her sufferings with Christian 2 CONC patience. 2 CONT 2 CONT DEATH: Religious services were conducted by Rev. Selah H. Barrett, after 2 CONC which she was interred upon the premises of her son. On the morning of 2 CONC her burial, the remains of her husband, in accordance with her request, 2 CONC were removed from their long resting place, about half a mile distan, 2 CONC (sic) and buried with her in the same grave. The scene was solemn and 2 CONC impressive. The coffin, in which he had been buried, was made of walnut, 2 CONC and was in a good state of preservation; but nothing remained of the 2 CONC corpse except bones, which laid in their natural form except the skull. 2 CONC This was not found in its original position, having, as is supposed, 2 CONC floated away upon the entrance of some water into the coffin. 1 SOUR @S41@ 2 QUAY 2 1 CHAN 2 DATE 13 NOV 2003 3 TIME 14:40:40 0 @I56@ INDI 1 NAME William /Robison/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1800 2 PLAC Tuscarora Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 _APPLIES_TO DATE_AND_PLACE 3 QUAY 2 1 DEAT 2 DATE Abt 1859 2 PLAC Meigs County, Ohio 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 _APPLIES_TO DATE_AND_PLACE 3 QUAY 2 1 FAMS @F30@ 1 FAMC @F19@ 1 NOTE Notes on William Robison by John Gessner: 2 CONT 2 CONT William Robison called Uncle Billy by the family was born in 1800 in what 2 CONC is now Tuscarora Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. No doubt he was 2 CONC named for his paternal grandfather, William Robison (1735-1810). It is 2 CONC William who is listed as a male under 10 with his parents in the 1800 2 CONC Census of Juniata Township, Cumberland County, PA. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the 1830 census for Green Township, Columbiana County, OH, he is 2 CONC listed as William Robison, 1 male 20-13 and 1 female 20-30. We know this 2 CONC from deeds. There is no marriage record for them in the Columbiana County 2 CONC records. From other facts it looks like Rebecca was a Cook, the daughter 2 CONC of Joel and Keturah Cook, and the sister of Jacob and Werick Cook. 2 CONT 2 CONT While the Robisons were in Green and later in Milton Township, Trumbull 2 CONC County, OH during the period 1826-1839, it was William who carried on the 2 CONC family business. The lot of the center in Greenford, the two farms in 2 CONC Milton plus other lots in Milton were carried in his name alone. Nothing 2 CONC was carried in the father's name. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1832 William went to Warren (the county seat of Trumbull County), and 2 CONC secured a marriage license for his sister, Mary Ann Robison, and his 2 CONC wife's brother, Jacob Cook. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1836 William went to Warren and secured a marriage license for his 2 CONC wife's brother, Werick Cook and Ann Cline, she of Milton. Werick was 2 CONC under age, so William filed the consent of his mother, Keturah Cook. Joel 2 CONC did not consent because he could not write his name. Rebecca, William's 2 CONC wife, could not sign her name either, and on the many deeds required 2 CONC signed with an X. 2 CONT 2 CONT Regarding the move of 1839, Silas Robison wrote that "My brothers William 2 CONC and Joseph left Newton Falls in Trumbull County about the same time as we 2 CONC did and got there the same day." Here was Meigs County, OH. Further 2 CONC quoting Silas: "My brother, William bought the land just below Dexter, 2 CONC now owned (1898) by M. L. Vale, which consisted of 90 acres. He put up a 2 CONC cabin on the little eminence between the bridge and the cut. Uncle Billy 2 CONC as he was familiarly called, sold this land to Jacob Cook, who lived on 2 CONC the place a while and then sold out to William Longsreth. My brother, 2 CONC William, died on land now owned by Homer Hill and in a house formerly 2 CONC occupied by John Robinson." 2 CONT 2 CONT William appears in the 1840 census for Salem Township, Meigs County, OH 2 CONC as William Robinson - 2 males under 5, 1 male 30-40, 2 females under 4 2 CONC and one female 30-40. He was not found in the 1850 census for Meigs 2 CONC County, but it is certain that he was there. He died sometime after 1851 2 CONC when his youngest child was born in 1860 when he is not listed with the 2 CONC family in the census. Sarah was born in what is now 2 CONC Tuscarora Township, Perry County, PA., was no doubt named for her 2 CONC paternal grandmother, Sarah Roseberry Robison. 2 CONT 2 CONT Her existence was unknown to me until Jean Robison wrote in February of 2 CONC 1998 saying that she had received some writings of Edith, the daughter of 2 CONC John Robison, Jr. of Brazil, Indiana. In the 2 CONC following year the Robisons and Cooks moved to Meigs County. Later in 2 CONC 1839 they divided the 320 acres - 160 acres to William Bradfield, and 160 2 CONC acres to Joseph Robison. It does not appear that the Bradfields ever 2 CONC lived in Meigs County, but they were there to sign deeds. 2 CONT 2 CONT William and Sarah Bradfield were in East Fairfield for the 1850 census. 2 CONC In 1852 they and most of their children moved to Rockport, Parke County, 2 CONC Indiana. 2 CONT 2 CONT William, an elder in the Christian Church, was born September 7, 1805 in 2 CONC Ohio and died April 26, 1862 near Rockport. Sarah died on the home farm 2 CONC on September 20, 1883. They are buried in the Union Cemetery in Adams 2 CONC County. 2 CONT 2 CONT From all sources we have there is evidence of ten children. 2 CONT 2 CONT In a biography of Reason Bradfield there appears this statement about his 2 CONC mother, Sarah: 2 CONT 2 CONT "Mrs. Bradfield joined the Christian Church when a girl, as she believed 2 CONC in the Apostolic custom of immersion, but on account of her father's 2 CONC opposition she went away from home. While living with his family in 2 CONC Greenford, OH John married Mary Baker (1807-1880). The marriage occurred 2 CONC on October 28, 1827 at Salem, Ohio. 2 CONT 2 CONT John and Mary were in Greenford for the 1830 census; moved to Milton with 2 CONC the others; and remained there until 1839. John and Mary were also in 2 CONC Greenford for the 1840 census. The 1850 census found the family in Perry 2 CONC Township, Columbiana County, Ohio on a small farm. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1853 they were in Stark County, when John purchased the Indiana farm 2 CONC formerly owned by his sister, Harriett Ann Robison Lewis. The seller was 2 CONC Edward Robison, brother of John, serving as guardian of Louisa Emeline 2 CONC Lewis, the sole surviving heir of her mother, Harriett Ann. 2 CONT 2 CONT So it was that in 1853 John, Mary, and their ten children moved to Cass 2 CONC County, Indiana. This is because Jean Robison of Coffeyville, Kansas and others 2 CONC have worked hard on the family history. Due to the lack of information on 2 CONC the other nine children, we will not go into any more detail on the 2 CONC children and their offspring. 2 CONT 2 CONT After Mary died in Cass County, Indiana on August 3, 1880, John appears 2 CONC to have gone to Meigs County, Ohio. Here he married Louisa Robison, the 2 CONC widow and second wife of his brother, Joseph Robison, Jr. This is 2 CONC verified by a writing of Edith (mentioned before.) Jacob died in 2 CONC Meigs county, Ohio. They had 6-8 children. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mary Ann Robison, the sixth child of Joseph and Elizabeth was born in 2 CONC 1812 in what is now Perry County, PA. She married Jacob Cook in Milton on 2 CONC November 26, 1834. This Jacob Cook was a brother of Rebecca, wife of 2 CONC William Robison. Another brother of Jacob and Rebecca was Werick Cook. 2 CONT 2 CONT William Robison went to Warren to get the marriage license for Mary Ann 2 CONC and Jacob. In 1836 William went for a license for Werick and Ann Cline of 2 CONC Milton. 2 CONT 2 CONT Nancy's parents were Joel and Keturah Cook. [Note: John Gessner passed away before I found the book 2 CONC by Jane Fletcher Fiske on Thomas Cooke's descendants David Warren 2 CONC Robison, August, 2002.] 2 CONT 2 CONT Jacob and Mary Ann made the 1839 move to Meigs County, Ohio. They are in 2 CONC the 1840 census for Salem Township, Meigs County as Jacob Cook, one male 2 CONC 30-40, one female 30-40, one female 5-10, two females under 5. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the 1850 census the same family shows: 2 CONT 2 CONT Jacob Cook 40 2 CONT Mary Ann 37 MD 2 CONT Sarah 17 OH 2 CONT Lucinda 14 OH 2 CONT Arminda 12 OH 2 CONT Russell 6 OH 2 CONT Mary 4 OH 2 CONT Martha 2 OH 2 CONT Edward Cook 29 OH 2 CONT Elizabeth Cook 8 OH 2 CONT 2 CONT So who is the Edward Cook? We may never know. He died in 1852, left a 2 CONC Will, and named Joseph Robison as Executor. The Will is of no help; it 2 CONC says that four hundred dollars is to go to Mariah Priscella Benedict, and 2 CONC the residue to be divided among his living brothers and sisters (not 2 CONC named.) 2 CONT 2 CONT The Meigs County Genealogical Society has a letter written by a D. 2 CONC Longstreth which tells us of Jacob and Mary Ann: 2 CONT 2 CONT ED. Leader: - In the fall of 1839 about six months after my father moved 2 CONC here, two brothers by the name of Cook, from Columbiana County, O., 2 CONC bought a farm adjoining and directly south of father's farm. Jacob Cook, 2 CONC the oldest brother, built a house about 200 yards south of where Dexter 2 CONC now stands and moved his family to it. Warrick Cook and his brother, 2 CONC built a small house about 150 yards west of where M. L. Vale now lives. 2 CONC Both houses were built in the woods and the future was supposed to be 2 CONC looked after as future necessities presented themselves. 2 CONT 2 CONT These men like other pioneer settlers looked from the doors of their rude 2 CONC cabins only to see the stately oak with its many companions of the 2 CONC forest, lifting their towering heads far heavenward, and hear the sweet 2 CONC melodies of the whip-poor-mill, the nighthawk and the owl, comingling 2 CONC with the song usually sung by the amphibious tribes of the water. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Cook brothers were hard working men and soon began to open up the 2 CONC forest in good earnest, and by the steady stroke the trees were felled, 2 CONC the grubs were taken out, the fields were fenced and in due time crops 2 CONC were grown. This work continued until the winter of 1843 and 1844, when 2 CONC father bought their farm, and Jacob Cook bought a piece of land across 2 CONC the creek nearly opposite the village of his brother-in-law, William 2 CONC Robison, who came from Columbiana County with the Cooks. 2 CONT 2 CONT Warrick Cook was rather a peculiar sort of a man, and sometimes allowed 2 CONC himself to get excited. He enjoyed an occasional hunt as well as any man 2 CONC and to illustrate his disposition to do what he undertook we will give 2 CONC one incident of his life. 2 CONT 2 CONT While hunting over in the neighborhood of Mud Fork, he saw a deer feeding 2 CONC on the moss of the rocks near where the Foldens now live. And quick as 2 CONC thought blazed away at the deer. At the report of the gun the deer 2 CONC bounded away. Warrick in his excitement threw down his gun, and he, too, 2 CONC bounded away after the deer. He followed it over the hill by Camerons, 2 CONC down by the burg, (or where it is now) up Log Run, and lost the trail on 2 CONC the hill near where Billy Folden lives. 2 CONT 2 CONT Warrick moved from here early in the forties and his subsequent life is 2 CONC unknown to the writers. 2 CONT 2 CONT William Robison moved about one mile up the creek to what was then known 2 CONC as the Woods Mill which had been built by a man by the name of Woods a 2 CONC few years previous. Robison continued to run the mill for a few years, 2 CONC when he abandoned it and moved into Columbia township." 2 CONT 2 CONT The 1860 census for Salem Township shows: 2 CONT 2 CONT J. She was 61 years of age, 10 months, and 2 CONC her cause of death was given as diptheria. While this record states that 2 CONC Mary Ann was born in Salem Township, it is clear to me that this is our 2 CONC Mary Ann and that she died before her mother. 2 CONT 2 CONT There were Cooks in Meigs County as early as 1810, one of these was 2 CONC Russell. Did Jacob and Mary Ann name their son after this neighbor? No 2 CONC doubt there are numerous descendants of this branch just waiting to be 2 CONC discovered. 1 SOUR @S19@ 2 QUAY 2 1 CHAN 2 DATE 1 SEP 2002 3 TIME 14:44:04 0 @I64@ INDI 1 NAME Jacob /Cook/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE Abt 1808 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 _APPLIES_TO DATE 3 QUAY 2 1 DEAT 2 PLAC Meigs County, Ohio 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 _APPLIES_TO PLACE 3 QUAY 2 1 FAMS @F37@ 1 CENS 2 DATE 1840 2 PLAC United States Census, Salem Township, Meigs County, Ohio 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 QUAY 2 1 CENS 2 DATE 1850 2 PLAC United States Census, Salem Township, Meigs County, Ohio 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 QUAY 2 1 CENS 2 DATE 1860 2 PLAC United States Census, Salem Township, Meigs County, Ohio 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 QUAY 2 1 CENS 2 DATE 1870 2 PLAC United States Census, Salem Township, Meigs County, Ohio 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 QUAY 2 1 SOUR @S19@ 2 _APPLIES_TO PLACE 2 QUAY 2 1 CHAN 2 DATE 1 SEP 2002 3 TIME 00:13:53 0 @I65@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /Robison/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1814 2 PLAC Perry County, Pennsylvania 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 _APPLIES_TO DATE_AND_PLACE 3 QUAY 2 1 DEAT 2 DATE 26 JUN 1838 2 PLAC Milton Township, Trumbull County (Now In Mahoning County), Ohio 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 _APPLIES_TO DATE_AND_PLACE 3 QUAY 2 1 BURI 2 PLAC Noland Lot, Vaughn Cemetry, Milton Township, Trumbull County, Ohio 2 SOUR @S19@ 3 _APPLIES_TO PLACE 3 QUAY 2 1 FAMC @F19@ 1 NOTE We know that Thomas Robison, the seventh child of Joseph and Elizabeth 2 CONC died on June 26, 1838 at 24 years of age, 11 months. The list contains 6 Robison, 14 Cole, and 1 Hanna Elston. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward Robison was the eighth child of Joseph and Elizabeth Robison. He 2 CONC declared in both the 1850 and 1860 census that he was born in 2 CONC Pennsylvania. The family came to what is now Greenford, Ohio before 1825. 2 CONC Whatever formal education he had was no doubt obtained at Green Center. 2 CONC In his family bible he listed his birth date as April 5, 1818. 2 CONT 2 CONT In a biography of John Robison, one of Edward's sons, it is stated that 2 CONC Edward was a stone mason and he had built a brick house when he was 16 2 CONC years old. It is likely that he learned the trade from his older brother. 2 CONC He worked at the mason trade for the rest of his life, yet he managed to 2 CONC also work at many other occupations. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward was in Milton by 1832. it is a family tradition that he cut stone 2 CONC in the construction of the Kinsman House in Warren, Ohio during the 2 CONC period 1832-1833. Tradesmen then worked away from home, camping on the 2 CONC job for days. 2 CONT 2 CONT On August 9, 1838 Edward Robison and Arminda Cole were married at 2 CONC Edenburg, Ohio. Under Ohio law a marriage license has to be obtained in 2 CONC the County where the bride resided. Arminda was the daughter of Jacob W. 2 CONC and Hannah Elston Cole. The Coles had been in Milton since 1813; before 2 CONC that they had been in Orange County, New York from 1700-1813; and had 2 CONC been in New York City as early as 1631. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1844 and in 1845 Edward secured deeds for several parts of the Milton 2 CONC farm. By these deeds he secured the parts that had been occupied by 2 CONC Edward's father, Joseph, and Edward's brother John. In 1852 Edward sold 2 CONC these parts to John Cole, Arminda's brother and they remained in the Cole 2 CONC family until about 1980. 2 CONT 2 CONT During 1838 and 1839 Edward and Arminda were in Milton. Where they were 2 CONC in 1840 is unknown. Edward was not on the personal property tax lists for 2 CONC 1840 and 1841. Edward was not in the 1840 census for Ohio. 2 CONT 2 CONT There is an Edward Robison of the correct age, with a wife of the correct 2 CONC age, and a son also of the correct age in Knox County, Indiana. He was 2 CONC living next door to a Michael Robinson. This Edward owned no land, 2 CONC appeared on no tax lists, and is not on the 1850 census. 2 CONT 2 CONT As noted before Alexander Robison and his wife Mary Moy Robison, appeared 2 CONC in Milton in 1838 and stayed there until 1842. He and his wife are in the 2 CONC 1840 census for Milton as over 65. (Note: Alex. is not a member of our 2 CONC Robison families. He is only a friend.) According to the Robison records 2 CONC of Juniata County, PA; Alexander left Ohio and came across the mountains 2 CONC from Perry County after 1842; Alex died in Juniata county; and then his 2 CONC wife went back to Ohio where she died. They had no children. Alexander 2 CONC apparently occuiped the Robison lands while Edward was gone. (Alexander 2 CONC went from Juniata county, to Milton, Ohio and then back to Juniata county 2 CONC where he died.) 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1848 Edward and his family, which at that time consisted of his wife 2 CONC and three children, moved to Palmyra. John Noland moved at the same time. 2 CONC These families settled across the road from Jacob W. Cole - Arminda's 2 CONC father. The farms were in Nolands' name; he deeded them to Edward about 2 CONC 1850. At this time Edward lived on the farm located on the south line of 2 CONC the church lot, the lot now known as "The Robison Church Cemetery." 2 CONT 2 CONT The census for 1850 finds Edward in Palmyra, Portage County - Page 457, 2 CONC Family #3. The listing shows: 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward Robinson 32, Stone Mason, born Pennsylvania 2 CONT Arminda Robinson 33, born Ohio 2 CONT James Robinson 9, born Ohio 2 CONT Olive M. Implements and machinery valued at $75.00. Livestock: 2 2 CONC horses, 2 milk cows, 2 other cattle, 12 sheep, 1 swine - all livestock 2 CONC valued at $152.00. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the fall of 1851 Harriett Ann Robison, sister of Edward died as did 2 CONC her husband, John Lewis and two of her children. This family lived near 2 CONC Brazil, Clay County, Indiana. Edward went to Indiana and brought the 2 CONC remaining chlidren back to his home. These children were Jane and Emaline 2 CONC Lewis. Edward had himself appointed Guardian of the girls; his bondsmen 2 CONC were the girls half brother and their uncle. Jane died; Emaline remained 2 CONC in Edward's household. She was there in 1862. We do not know what became 2 CONC of her. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward farmed and worked as a mason contractor. He became interested in 2 CONC steam saw mills and worked at this. In 1859 he and his family moved to 2 CONC Alliance, Stark County, Ohio where he owned and operated a steam saw 2 CONC mill. The 1860 census shows the family in Alliance as follows: 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward Robinson 42 Male - mason Pennsylvania 2 CONT Arminda Robinson 43 Female Ohio 2 CONT James Robinson 19 Male - laborer Ohio 2 CONT Olive Robinson 18 Female - milliner Ohio 2 CONT John Robinson 13 Male - in school Ohio 2 CONT Frank Robinson 5 Male Ohio 2 CONT Jenny Robinson 2 Female Ohio 2 CONT Emaline Lewis 16 Female - in school Indiana 2 CONT John Baker 21 Male - laborer Ohio 2 CONT Jacob W. Edward still 2 CONC owned the other farm, and by combining the two places, he had over 150 2 CONC acres with 2 sets of buildings. 2 CONT 2 CONT There was a church cemetery. It was a neighborhood affair. Started about 2 CONC 1844 it had no denominational ties. It was known as the Robison Church. 2 CONC Edward preached in this church at times. My grandfather, Frank Robison, 2 CONC in late years did not attend church. he asserted that as a child he had 2 CONC been forced to sit in church for days and resented it. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward served as Justice of the Peace. He was a Democrat, active in 2 CONC politics. We know that he wrote letters. The pension filed for Jacob 2 CONC Cole, father of Jacob W. Cole (Arminda's father) contains numerous 2 CONC letters written by Edward on behalf of Jacob W.'s efforts to collect his 2 CONC father's Revolutionary War Pension. 2 CONT 2 CONT Late in the summer of 1863 Edward lost a leg in an accident in a steam 2 CONC saw mill. Gangrene set in and after much pain and suffering he died on 2 CONC October 20, 1863. In his last days he complained of excessive pain in the 2 CONC leg that was gone. The family went out to the garden; dug up the leg; 2 CONC turned it over; and the pain ceased. 2 CONT 2 CONT Edward's Will provided that the farms should go to Arminda for her life 2 CONC use with the remainder interest to the five children. James was appointed 2 CONC as Executor. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Estate was modest. the inventory of the personal property shows the 2 CONC following: 2 CONT 2 CONT Inventory and appraisement of the personal estate of Edward Robison 2 CONC deceased made on the 24th day of October, 1863 by Samuel Stickle, M.
