Agreed. The Mars Trilogy were absolutely fantastic books. Have you tried Years of Rice and Salt by the same author?

Before they get theirs up there (they are planning on launch in 2009) we need to Raise the black flag high! For only ~$5000 we could put a micro-satellite in space. If anarchists on each continent commits to a satellite we begin an infrastructure for our earth-and-space bound friends to begin communicating without ties to land, sea, state or ATT.

You had me at 'Anarchy in Space.' Lmao kick-ass title for a discussion.

But this does seem really interesting, if I had any money I'd donate towards it, but I don't.

anyone think about launching rockets at Mars and Venus filled with seeds and spores for various extremophiles?

The guy behind the microlaunchers idea has a site: http://www.microlaunchers.com/

He did a Google Talks presentation awhile back, it talks about the economics and the things you can do. Communication satellites are one, but they'd have very limited bandwidth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtTeG_HElNk

I was rather under the impression that it cost a lot more than that to run any sort of space programme. Do you have any sources referring to the economy of sending these micro satellites into space, and what - practically speaking - micro satellites can be used for?

Fuck nuclear rockets, Sea Dragon is where it's at. Rockets you build in a shipyard, make 'em of thick ass metal, and launch 'em with insane margins. 550 metric tons to LEO. That's 1.2 million pounds. Or basically the weight of all American high government officials (all governors, senators, representatives, and judicial appointments, including only appellate courts of course).

This is one of the most awesome websites ever. I want to make one like it now, it wouldn't be hard.

Like the exobiology, one pseudoscience like alquimia or psicology.

The Japanese have devised a way to extract uranium from sea water (without large energy intensive industrial suction stations). You lower canisters of uranium attracting compounds and after a few months you have yellowcake. It's rather novel. So there's your fuel.

I just read through this thread again and I was wondering, what the hell attracts Uranium? Or will I have to wait till |Y| comes back. I miss him. :(

If they could figure out how, theoretically the casimir effect could stabilise worm holes. I think that would be freakin awesome! Alternate dimensions, time travel or just instant travel across the universe.

From what I understood from the wikipedia page, the casimir effect could also create the bubble needed in the alcubiere drive. I don't think it can contract space though. (where is |Y| when you need him!) Apparently they could use "dark energy" (which supposedly is the cause of the mass expansion of the universe (still happening I'm pretty sure) if they could harness that we could have FTL travel...But while capatalists and statists are in power the funds won't get there. *sigh*
