Anarchist Sci-fi for Teens. More Please!

Postby NathanM » Tue Dec 07, 2010 9:21 am

Hi
It was Ursula LeGuin that introduced me to science fiction with an Anarchist slant when I was a teenager and I ploughed through her books, immersing myself in her work and worlds.
Last year I took a year and a bit off working with kids and kids charities to write a contemporary sci-fi book to help get Radical politics back into teenage science fiction.
The result was The Cloud Connection'
in my book 'The Cloud Connection' the Climate Crisis has happened and The Big Freeze has transformed the world.
Government forces focus on maintaining utilities and transport infrasttructure. Private Military Companies (PMC) are taking care of public order and are in the pay of corporations, protecting their assets.
Most technological development has literally frozen to a halt.
The Situationists are hackers and cyber-activists putting out a truer perspective of what's going on and campaign for a rebuilding 'for the people by the people'.
The Weathermen are veterans of the Iraq, iran and Korean wars, protecting vulnerable, isolated communities.
The story is told through the search of a young man for his missing mother, a nano-technologist who has destroyed her work and gone on the run to evade a ruthless PMC who wants to use her work for military purposes.
