classroom

Postby Phryq » Tue Jan 22, 2013 9:14 am

I'm a teacher in the middle east, trying to run my classroom as a syndicate (giving them as much control using direct-democracy as I'm able to).
Right now the way I control them (I have to do that; it's my job) is a series of bribes and threats. I've compared this with my class to the idea of the monetary system; you trade money for the things you want, the way my class trades good behavior for the things they want (soccer games, fun things, pizza parties).
I'm trying to get them to move away from this, so that instead we use a 'gift economy'. Instead of me giving them things in *exchange* for their good behavior, I will simply give them to them as a gift. Likewise, they'll do the best they can for me, simply because I need them to do that, and because they're trying to help me (they don't personally desire to cover the curriculum, so that route won't work for me. I'm in a conservative school, not a freeschool).
Any ideas on stories I can show them, or any other resources that might be good?
I need them to understand the concept that if my personal needs aren't full-filled, I have no choice but to use the things I can give them as leverage (like how in the world, if a person is afraid of not having enough food, he needs to use his skills as leverage to get that food. But if food is in plenty, he's free to give away his skilled work).
