Who is Paula Zerzan?

Postby homage » Mon Mar 07, 2005 6:00 pm

I picked up this book from Freedom Press (UK) called Questioning Technology: A Critical Anthology (1988). In it, there is an article called "Industrialization and Domestication" by John and Paula Zerzan. Does anyone know who Paula Zerzan is? Are they still married? Is she still around? Does anyone know what she is doing? Is she an old Maoist too? Is she the Eleanor Roosevelt to John's FDR? (Sorry, that last one was in bad taste.)

After a quick Googling, I found that she is a member of the Sonoma County, Cali Audobon Society. Other than that, everything that she is mentioned along side John in is in Spanish (about 20 sites).

...neither did I. I quite like some of Zerzan's (John) critiques of language etc. and we can learn a lot from this kind of questioning of our human history and civilisation. But like, after I've read one of his essays I feel well what does he actually want?! For us to stop speaking? It's just fucking crazy.

I believe he was at one point. That could just be a ridiculous rumor, but that would be stupid b/c he obviously isn't anymore and many radicals (or primitivists) were initially radicalized in another "tradition."

I don't think that primitivism a la Zerzan meshes well with the anarchist project. Language, while it can be bad or oppressive or whatever, is a huge part of our individuality. I see a lot of Zerzanism as emphasizing the collective over the individual. Not the balance that I'm interested in.

Indeed, and I never understood what the benefits of living without any kind of language, art, etc. would be. We would have very little freedom in a Zerzanist society if so much must be gotten rid of.

IIRC, he claims that language ultimately leads to hierarchy.
