CONGRESSES OF THE CNT, CONCISELY

1910.- Foundation Congress of the CNT in Barcelona.

1911.- First Congress of the CNT, also in Barcelona.

1919.- II Congress of the CNT (Comedia theatre).

1922.- The CNT, in a National Assembly of unions, separates from the IIIth. International and adheres to the I.W.A., refounded in Berlin in 1921.

1931.- The third congress of the CNT assembles in Madrid (Conservatorio). It is approved the formation of Nationals Federations of Industry, maintaining as a basis the single unions of branch.

1936 (first of may).- The IV congress of the CNT is celebrated in Zaragoza (Iris Park theatre). It is defined the confederal concept of libertarian communism and the economic conception of the revolution, which the anarcho-syndicalists will put into practice during the Spanish Revolution (1936- 1939).

1979.- The CNT assembles in Madrid (Palacio de Congresos, Casa de Campo), after forty years of fascist dictatorship. A minority section, which is follower of the reformism, splits off and creates "another CNT".

1983.- (January) The VIth congress is celebrated in Barcelona. The question "union action" is postponed, due to the grade of nerviness which made impossible to come to an understanding between followers and detractors of union election.

1983.- (April) A congress is celebrated in Torrejon de Ardoz (madrid) with only one question in the agenda: union action. The attitude which is contrary to the union election wins. Twenty per cent of the organization splits off and join the "another CNT", splitted off in 1979.

1990.- (April) The CNT celebrates in Bilbao (Pais Vasco) its VIIth congress with the slogan "the union for hard times". This time there is not split! The "another CNT" has been forced to change its initials into CGT and it swims in the troubled waters of the reformism.

1995 (December).- The "Palacio de Congresos" of Granada will receive the VIIIth congress of the CNT.
