What Is Civilization?
by Joe
From Green Anarchy #11

I cannot define it
but I know how it feels
it feels like concrete on the ground,
and walls all around
it feels like exhaust burning in your lungs,
a less obvious form of gas chambers
it feels like being enclosed
when once we were free
it sounds like the screams of animals and
the voices of scientists and CEOs who try to justify
it is the wolves that are gone
and the myths that remain
it smells like burning gas fumes
and burning flesh
it looks like streams of jet exhaust across the sky
instead of the white clouds and stars,
and pigeons that used to fly by
it's the feeling I get,
when I see that Earth will soon be dead
and am told that I am over reacting
and forced quiet by the T.V., pills, teachers, and psychologists
it is the farms of wheat,
where forests of plenty once did grow
I can't tell you what civilization is,
not in its own language
but I know it when I see it
it looks like a scar on the land
where trees used to stand
