Letter: Sligo bin tax and Sinn Féin

Dear friends,

In your last paper you pointed out that Sinn Féin voted for the bin tax in Sligo. In fact they went further than that, they voted to raise the charge from £100 to £148 this year. This is the same Sinn Féin who spent the last 10 years organising protests here against service charges. Now, with three councillors on the Corporation they have decided that power is far more important than keeping the promises they made at election time.

They pledged to oppose the bin tax and not to sign any Mayoral pact with Fianna Fáil. As soon as the election count was completed they did a deal with Fianna Fáil. Anything FF wanted they got, Sinn Feín even voted with them to oppose regular street cleaning in Forthill and to refuse funding for traffic calming measures at Devins Drive.
