The millionaires who own National Irish Bank know that crime pays, and pays well. They are not to be prosecuted for overcharging customers, the loot from which had boosted the bank's profits and the shareholders' dividends. A Garda enquiry found that NIB had systematically stolen from customers' accounts, but because none of the bank's managers benefited directly, nobody can be charged with an offence. Imagine what would happen if you stole money from the bank but gave it all away to someone else. Would the Gardai refuse to charge you - because you had not personally benefited?

Since the North American Free Trade Agreement was signed, wages in Mexico have declined by 10%, while labour productivity increased by 45%. This is mainly due to the fact that many workers have had their working time increased from 8 to 12 hours a day. In 1980 the average carworker in Mexico earned about one third of the hourly wage of an American car worker. By last year this was down to one twelfth.
