Get involved in building anarchism in Ireland

This issue marks the 1st anniversary of Workers Solidarity published in our new single sheet format. Probably to the vast majority of our readership this means nothing as you will have never seen the old three sheet format which we sold on the streets and at demonstrations. But just over a year ago we decided it was time to change format so that we could distribute much greater numbers of papers door to door and so reach far more people.

A small group of anarchists have been publishing Workers Solidarity since 1984 in a variety of formats. We do so because we think it is essential to not only tell people what anarchism is really about but also to provide an honest alternative to the bosses' media. We publish the stories that they generally won't.

We are pleased with the response this new format has gotten over the last year, a response that allowed us to quickly double our print run to 6,000 copies. A few dozen people have come forward in that year and started to help us distribute this paper, allowing it to reach people that it otherwise wouldn't.

Among the towns where it is given out are Athenry, Belfast, Castledermot, Cork, Drogheda, Derry, Dublin, Fermoy, Galway, Kilcock, Kilkenny, Lurgan, Manorhamilton, Maynooth, Naas, Oughterard, Sligo and Thurles. Others have written articles for us and a few have joined us.

Over the last year we have been able to tell thousands of people about the mass opposition that has been building to the bin charges and about the motivations of those fighting capitalist globalisation. We have offered a viewpoint on the peace process, the teachers' strike and the growth of racism in Ireland that is missing from the mainstream press. And with this we have informed thousands of people about the anarchist movement and what it stands for from Ireland, to Africa, to Southern America and the Czech republic.

But let's not get carried away. 6,000 copies of a paper every two months is no answer to the bosses' press. It's hardly 1% of the combined daily circulation of the Star, the Irish Independent and the Irish Times. Not to mention the huge state and private owned TV and radio businesses that reach on an hourly basis into just about every home in the country.

That's why we need YOU to get involved. At its simplest this could be taking 10, 20, 50 copies of each issue and distributing them to your friends, workmates and neighbours. Or it could be making a regular donation to allow us to increase our print run.

But what we really need is for more people to join us, to help us not only in producing this paper but also in helping to put anarchist ideas into practise. We know there are lots of you who agree with anarchist ideas out there, we need YOUR help not only in challenging the bosses' press but also in building a movement that can put these ideas into practice.
