August saw a Japanese court ordering a hospital to pay compensation to the family of a junior doctor who was worked to death. Hirohito Mori died 10 weeks after he was employed by Kansai Medical University Hospital, which made him work 12 hour shifts and then undertake other tasks outside his normal hours. He died of heart failure. His 'pay' had been a scholarship of just £350 a month.

One in four children in Britain live below the poverty line, mainly because of cuts in welfare benefits. This was the finding of research published on October 8th by the Barnardo's children's charity

Ryanair boss and union basher, Michael O'Leary, is constantly moaning about the possibility of state aid being given to Aer Lingus. Maybe this 'self-made' hypocrite could explain why he took a three million euros grant from Enterprise Ireland to set up a call centre for his online booking service. Or why he got a further four million euros for his new HQ at Dublin Airport (through a 12 year suspension of rent and a further 6 years with a 50% rebate)?

170,000 children in Africa die from hunger and preventable diseases every nine days (the duration of a normal International Monetary Fund meeting).

The world's 200 richest bosses more than doubled their wealth in just four years (1994-98), giving them a combined wealth of over $1 trillion.
