The weeks previously had seen a half dozen well attended anti-bin tax public meetings throughout the borough. It had been hoped to get people from these to a protest outside the Town Hall when councillors met to vote on the estimates for the coming year. But would the rain keep everyone at home?
Over 100 - including Workers Solidarity Movement members - turned up (and got drenched). This was a determined crowd, no way would they be paying twice (PAYE/VAT and now the proposed local charges) for their bin collection service. "No way - we won't pay" was certainly the most popular slogan.
The Council cancelled its meeting, putting it off until Thursday 30th. We will be back then to let them know that their attempt to screw even more from PAYE workers and pensioners is as doomed as their futile efforts a few years ago to make us pay for water.
If they want more cash, let them ask Liam Lawlor or Charlie Haughey or Michael Lowry or Ray Burke or....
